We will discuss how to get admission in different veterinary colleges throughout the country.

Admission procedure for UG (Undergraduate):

In  2020,to get admission in veterinary colleges aspirants have to apply NEET exam 2020 conducted by NTA. Application has already taken place. So,now aspirants have to compete in this exam and try for good score and go for veterinary science if interested.

Eligibility Criteria for UG:

Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as core subjects from a recognized board. 

Candidates must have completed 17 years as on December 31, 2019. There is no upper age limit till the Supreme Court passes its judgement on it.

12th percentage required for NEET 2020 are separate for each category and can be listed as under. NEET eligibility marks in 12th to be considered are aggregate marks only for PCB subjects
                           UR - 50%,
                           OBC/SC/ST - 40%,
                           PWD - 45%

Duration of the Course:This is a 5 ½  year’s course.Out of which 4 ½ year is Course work and 1 year is the period of Internship.After completion of internship one can get B.V.Sc & A.H. Degree and become an animal doctor.

Fees Structure: Fees structure is variable depending upon different colleges and universities.In Govt. colleges fees is not much but if one goes for private colleges(Some states have private colleges like Rajasthan,Punjab etc.) You can visit the College website for Fees Structure in details. Scholarship: After getting admission one can opt for scholarship based on merit ( Academic Performance). It may be University Scholarship or different Govt. Scholarship.

 Admission Procedure for PG and PhD:

To get admission in PG or PhD in Veterinary or Animal science or Veterinary Biotechnology,aspirants have to appear in ICAR-AIEEA-PG,2020 or ICAR-AICE-JRF/SRF,2020 and based upon rank,one can get admission in different veterinary universities.

Duration : PG is of 2 years and PhD is of 3 years. 
Scholarship: During PG & PhD also one can get good amount of Scholarship from ICAR, or University or Govt. Scholarship.


 Avenues of Veterinary Profession:

Abroad : There are ample scope and opportunities of Veterinary Science in different foreign countries. If someone is interested to go abroad and study, can surely persue this career.In abroad, the Veterinary Graduates are given Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. One can also go for Specialisation which requires an additional 2-3 years of study and passing an intensive exam to get  themselves recognized under broader certifications which include many areas like Anesthesiology, Lab Animal Medicine, Microbiology, Nutrition, Opthalmology, Radiology, Surgery, Theriogenology, Toxicology, Zoological Medicine, Dermatology, Emergency & Critical Care & a number of Species – specific options like Poultry, Equine, Cattle, etc.


Research Platform as an ARS
 : Many Veterinary Students aspire for the post of Agricultural Research Scientists (ARS). Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) under Dept. of Agriculture Research and Extension, Govt. of India conducts ARS exam to recruit Veterinary PhD Students for the post of Agricultural Scientists in several ICAR Institutes across all over India. Science is upgrading & evolving to great levels each and every day. With this there are a lot of advancements in the Veterinary Profession. There is huge scope and need for research in India and abroad also in different fields of Veterinary Science like Veterinary Microbiology, Biotechnology, etc. Scientists across all over the world are working towards the betterment & promotion of the scientific knowledge & skills  to provide newer drugs ,vaccines, diagnostic kits to combat various animal diseases.

Professors & Lecturers: A Veterinary PhD student (with NET qualified) as per UGC Guidelines from the year 2021, can opt for the post of Professors or Lecturers in different Veterinary Colleges. Initially there is recruitment to the post of ASSTT. Professor.

Veterinary Officer/ Block Animal Husbandary Officer : Veterinary Graduates are recruited to this post by the respective State Public Service Commission to exercise and execute veterinary services at respective blocks. This is a post of Group A Gazetted Officer with a handsome salary.

Food Safety Officer/ Food Analyst : Veterinary Graduates are eligible to apply for the post of FSO or FA. The recruitment is done by FSSAI (Food Safety & Standards Authority of India) at each and every districts & states of India which mainly works for regulating the food manufacturing, Storage, Distribution by maintaining the overall standards of different food articles & to ensure availability of wholesome food for human consumption.

Banking Sector: Veterinary graduates are eligible for the post of IBPS-AFO(Agricultural Field Officer) and also for assistant manager in different rural bank under NABARD. A very good job with a high prospect and one can easily rise upto Zonal manager and higher post.

Private Jobs : There are ample scope and opportunities for a Veterinary Graduate & Post Graduate in various private sector. A large number of doors are opened up like:

 Pharmaceutical Companies – a few renowned ones are  Zydus, Virbac, Mankind, Zoetis, Merck Animal Health, Novartis, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bayer, Elanco, Merial, etc where the Veterinarians are recruited to the post of Researchers in R & D dept.The remuneration is very much lucrative in this sector.

Poultry Sector- With the ever increasing population there is huge demand of Chicken, Eggs, etc in India and also in abroad. So, to meet up with these demands, Poultry sector like Venky’s , Suguna, Arambagh Hatcheries are just blooming at a very fast pace. Thus it is generating a huge employment opportunities for Veterinary graduates as well as post graduates to the post of Veterinary Doctors, Farm Advisor & Manager and offers good package.

Meat Processing Sectors/ Abattoirs – Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India monitors the export of Processed food products like Meat, Poultry, Dairy, etc and also registers and approve lincense to the various Meat Plants & Abattoirs. Their Inspection Committee comprises of members from Veterinary Profession who are experts in this field. This opens up a platform for Veterinarians.

Animal Feed Processing Sector – Across all over the world various Animal feed processing companies like Godrej Agrovet, Cargill, Tyson, Waltham (Pedigree), Nutreco  are growing rapidly to meet up the processed  feed requirements of Ruminants & Pet animals. All these companies are hiring Veterinary Graduates as well as Post graduates with high perks to the post of Farm Manager & Advisor.

Dairy Sector – NDDB ( National Dairy Development Board), State Milk Federations & Dairy Cooperatives like AMUL(Gujarat); MOTHER DAIRY(Delhi); etc recruits Veterinary Graduates as Veterinary Officer or Project Manager. So, this is another sector where the Veterinary Graduates can flourish & prosper to great levels and are paid with handsome salary.

Private Practitioner/ Pet Clinics : One Veterinary Graduate can easily open up his or her private clinics and go for treatment. This is also a good choice available to kick start own clinics  set-up at any urban areas specially, as now a days companion animals have become a part and parcel of Urban lifestyle. One good Veterinary Practitioner can also gain name and fame after practicing for quite sometimes at a particular area.

Civil Services : After graduating Veterinary Science, if someone has a special interest & keen desire in Civil Services like IAS, IPS, IRS, etc can also prepare for UPSC and State PSC. One Veterinary Graduate can also opt for another creamy & lucrative service like IFS ( Indian Forest Service).

Indian Army : The Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) is an administrative and operational branch of the Indian Army & also occupies a grand historical background & a rich heritage.Animals specially Horses, Elephants, Camels, Dogs are an integral part of Army’s logistics. Veterinarians employed are mainly responsible for treating, breeding, rearing & training of all the animals used in Army.

Wildlife/ Zoo Veterinarians in Govt. Zoos, National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, etc : There is a huge scope and prospects of Veterinary Graduates in all these sectors concerned with the sole priority of treating a wide variety and range of wild animals and birds & several Endangered species too. Here, the Vets are involved in carrying out their treatment, immunization, planning their diets and thus regulating the nutrition aspect too, involved in various breeding programmes & policies of various endangered species, etc   


ICAR – KVK : The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) situated in New – Delhi has started the KVKs- Krishi Vigyan Kendras in several districts of our country with different mandates. This ICAR- KVK recruitment to various prestigious posts like Subject Matter Specialist, SRF, Scientists provides ample scope and opportunities for Veterinary Graduates as well as Post Graduate candidates for executing various research related works & promoting towards advancement in different Science fields.

NGO & Self Help Groups : A lot of Veterinarians have extreme love & passion for animals and they are highly enthusiastic to work for various Animal Rights Organization. There are a lot of platforms to begin your career with any NGO groups at different States of our country.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the largest Animal Rights Organization in the world. PETA hires Veterinarians to be a part of their journey and to achieve their goal. Besides this there are a lot many organizations one Veterinarian can join.

Mobile Veterinary Clinics:  Just after graduating a Veterinarian  can easily join the Mobile Veterinary Clinics service. Under this Project, the Veterinarian organizes certain number of camps and render quality treatment to the animals of different villages at a bare minimum charges or no charge at all.

Start- up Business: A Veterinary graduate can be a good Entrepreneur with enormous potential in every aspects to start up his or her own venture like Livestock – Agribusiness, Duck – Fish Integrated Farming, Dairy Farms, Pig Farms, Poultry Farms, Farm Machineries Company, Feed Processing Plants, Meat Products Processing Plants, Export & Supply Chains of Livestock produce, Breeding Farms, etc with sole innovative ideas and can create a landmark in respective field. For financial assistance, budding Entrepreneurs get aid from various Govt. schemes like RKVY-RAFTAAR and can also opt for loans at subsidized rates under special policies of Govt. specifically for encouraging innovative ideas of youth.
